Pain Management related to Scoliosis through Manual Therapies (Case study)

 

The American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) suggests there are three categories (idiopathic, congenital, and neuromuscular) into which the different forms of scoliosis fit.  Most types of scoliosis are idiopathic (the cause is unknown or that there is no single factor that contributes to the development of the disease). Functional scoliosis, also called nonstructural scoliosis, is treated by correcting the underlying issues. Whereas structural scoliosis in which there is a fixed curvature of the spine requires treatment of the vertebrae (spinal bones).  

• Goal of this study. Document current symptoms management strategies, and assess improvement or lack of improvement through the use of protocols A (soft tissue manipulation) and B (Proprietary Strengthening/Stretching).

• Our hypothesis; Depending on classification of scoliosis this study should yield evidence demonstrating specific protocols and therapies benefiting individuals with some types of scoliosis.

• To specifically answer: which protocols most reduce symptoms.

• Methodology: Conducted over five (5) weeks; this study will include client interviews, functional movement measurements, client self-reporting for activities of daily living. Clinical assessments, exercise and therapeutics. 

• Participants. Participants are non-compensated volunteers.

• Data Collection:  The data that will be collected via physical and electronic forms, and the analysis of the data will be conducted by Chris White who will provide reporting.  Conclusions will be used for developing continuing education, marketing and further research.
